Brit sculptor adds Beetle to undersea park
Imaginative work of Brit sculptor on the seabed off Mexico
A VW Beetle is the latest addition to an underwater sculpture park in Mexico by a British artist.
Jason deCaires Taylor watched as his 8-tonne concrete Volkswagen Beetle was lowered into the sea off Cancun.
The 36 year-old sculptor from Canterbury, Kent is a major contributor to The Museum of Underwater Modern Art in Mexico.
Built of pH neutral porous concrete, his VW sculpture was sunk in 10 metres of water for visiting divers.
But it was also built incorporating compartments for marine life to live in as an artificial reef.
Mr deCaires Taylor has sunk previous works at the site including a 350-strong crowd of people and a sculpture of a man watching television.
The real Volkswagen Beetle car was still produced in Mexico as recently as 2003, although the artist said it had the perfect shape to weather strong currents and tropical storms.
